How to Tune Your Shocks for Better Off-Road Handling
How to Tune Your Shocks for Better Off-Road Handling
Off-road RC cars are built to handle rough terrain, but did you know that properly tuned shocks can make a huge difference in performance? Whether you’re bashing in the backyard or hitting dirt trails, here are some simple tips to get your shocks dialed in.
1. Check Oil Weight
Shock oil controls how fast your suspension moves.
-
Lighter oil (lower weight) = softer suspension, better for bumpy surfaces.
-
Heavier oil (higher weight) = stiffer suspension, ideal for smooth tracks or big jumps.
2. Adjust Spring Preload
Use the preload collars on your shocks to adjust ride height. More preload raises the car, less preload lowers it. A balanced ride height prevents bottoming out while keeping stability.
3. Match Left & Right
Always keep shock adjustments equal on both sides. Uneven settings can cause your car to pull one way or roll over more easily.
4. Test & Tweak
There’s no “perfect” setup for everyone. Try small changes, run a few laps, and see how your RC car feels. Over time, you’ll find what works best for your terrain and driving style.
👉 With just a few minutes of tuning, you’ll notice smoother landings, better cornering, and a more fun driving experience.
